When done right, YouTube descriptions can help boost your ranking in search engine results and can also lead to longer viewing times. Well-crafted video descriptions are immensely important to a YouTube marketing strategy. The big question is, how do you write effective descriptions for your video content? Is there a guideline to follow? Well, that’s what we are here to help with!
There are two different types of descriptions that YouTube contains, channel descriptions and video descriptions. The channel description is the snippet of text that describes the overall channel to followers and viewers. The video description, on the other hand, is meant to present a synopsis of each unique video. Here are some tricks to help make your channel and videos stand out among the rest:
- Keywords
- Be Specific
- YouTube Analytics
- Partnerships
Keywords
Not sure what keywords to use? Look at your competition or better yet, your inspiration. What describes them? How do they stand out? Use Google Ad’s Keyword Planner and Google Trends to find what’s right for your channel. Use two to three related keywords strategically throughout your text. But be careful not to overdo it, as pages are penalized if their content is oversaturated with keywords.
Be Specific
The keywords you choose for your page and videos are super important to their performance on YouTube. Keywords help YouTube’s algorithm roam your content and using the right ones can help your content be displayed higher than others. The more specific your keywords match the content of your videos, the better they will perform.
YouTube Analytics
Use Google Analytics to your advantage! Once you have established your keywords, start monitoring them in YouTube Analytics. This will show you what is performing the best and where you may need to make adjustments. YouTube Analytics will also reveal what other content your audience is being drawn to. These insights may better help you understand your target audience, and allow you to adjust your keywords more.
Partnerships
Once you have developed a niche and gained a following, you may be considered an influencer in that area. YouTube influencers have the power to influence audiences and set trends. As an influencer, you can leverage your position by partnering with other companies to offer incentives to your audience and even make money.
Do’s and Don’ts
DO use a call to action. Engage your audience and entice them to interact with your content. Create calls to action that are easy to understand, create a sense of urgency, and offer clear benefits to the viewer.
DON’T use clickbait. No one wants to be spammed or deceived when searching for content. Dishonest use of keywords will result in your channel losing viewership and getting fewer likes and followers. Keep the content of your video descriptions relevant and your viewers happy, this will benefit you in the long run.
