There are two different types of descriptions that YouTube contains, channel descriptions and video descriptions. The channel description is the snippet of text that describes the overall channel to followers and viewers. The video description, on the other hand, is meant to present a synopsis of each unique video. Here are some tricks to help make your channel and videos stand out among the rest:

Not sure what keywords to use? Look at your competition or better yet, your inspiration. What describes them? How do they stand out?
