What you Need to Know about SEO
You don’t want to be left out of the global internet community. You need your company, product, or service seen by others if it is going anywhere! To do this though means understanding how search engines work and what they use as ranking factors so that you can rank higher on SERPs (search engine results pages). One such factor would be Search Engine Optimization–this helps websites appear at “top-of-mind when consumers are looking around online for something new; plus having good SEO makes people more likely to purchase from you because they are convinced your content is superior to others.
What is SEO and why does it matter
SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the practice of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to a website through organic search engine results. There are three key parts of your SEO, discovery (your site being crawled), relevance (indexing your search results), and authority (ranking your site). SEO aids in websites standing out in the online crowd by allowing bots of search engines to discover your content. This is done by a process called crawling. In which Google or Bing’s bots will crawl and index your website taking in your keywords, phrases, and other identifying information in order to promote your site in their search results.
Why do search engines rank certain websites higher than others?
This is all dependent upon your website’s “authority.” Authority boils down to the volume and quality of backlinks on your site. A backlink is literally a link back to your website from another website. Ask yourself, how does your website rank up against its competitors? Are you getting mentions and tags on your social media pages? Are you getting referenced from other credible sites? All of these aspects go into the ranking of your website.
How to optimize your website for SEO
Use the following key performance indicators (KPI’s) and research how your website is performing.
- The amount of organic traffic you are receiving – How are people finding your site? Where is the traffic coming from?
- Keyword ranking – How do your keywords rank? What is your competition using?
- Conversion rate – How many of those who come to your site are making a purchase, filling out a contact form, subscribing, or completing whatever action you want from visitors to your website.
- Bounce rate – how many of those who come to your site are leaving immediately? Why are they leaving? Is it the accessibility? The load time? Bad site design?
Common mistakes when optimizing a website for SEO
Some common mistakes around SEO include buying backlinks. Do not do this. Backlinks help establish your authority and make your website all-around better. Simply reach out to bloggers or news sites and see if you can provide information for them on your industry. Depending on your industry, you can even join an email list for reporters in which they ask for the public’s help/opinions on things. Anything that is positive should be linked to your site. The less credible or unrelated the link is, the worse you will rank.
For example, if you have a website about beauty products you would want other websites in the beauty industry to link back to your site. Over time this will increase the authority of your website as a credible source in your industry.
How to use social media to increase traffic on your site
Complete your profiles. All of them. Wherever you want to be seen. Whether it’s Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, or all of the above. Fill in all the information that you can about your business. It will help you to be seen.
If you write blog posts on your website be sure to promote them on social media! This will link to your site thus creating more traffic and awareness. Promoting your blogs on social media, it also creates a backlink to your website thus giving you more authority and possibly upping your search ranking. Start guest blogging or have other bloggers appear on your site. This, again, is creating backlinks and making your site more credible.
